Our guide told us that one of Napeoleon's soldiers accidentally shot off its beard and nose. The Sphinx actually has the head of Pharoah Cheops and the body of a lion. This is far from the only Sphinx in Egypt, just the most famous one. It seems that to have a statue built of oneself with the body of lion symbolized strength and power.
